Citizens Electric Corporation Supports Missouri Mesonet Weather Network to Strengthen Local Weather Safety

All News

Citizens Electric Corporation is proud to support the safety and success of our local communities through a collaborative partnership with the University of Missouri Extension office. As a sponsor of the Missouri Mesonet Weather Station Network, Citizens Electric helps bring real-time, localized weather data to residents, farmers, and businesses across our six-county service area.

Installed in 2020 on the grounds of Citizens Electric’s service center near Missouri Highway 32 west of Ste. Genevieve, the Mesonet station is one of nearly 40 across the state. Its strategic location allows the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue more timely and accurate severe weather warnings, giving our communities critical time to prepare and respond.

The term mesonet (pronounced “meh-zoh-net”) refers to a network of automated weather stations designed to monitor and report mesoscale weather patterns—those that affect areas on the scale of tens to hundreds of miles. These stations provide data that is vital not only to farmers and agri-businesses, but also to utility providers, hospitals, road crews, pilots, insurance agencies, and emergency responders.

“For Citizens Electric, access to reliable weather data is essential,” said Curt Iffert, Vice President of Operations. “Our operations team depends on NWS forecasts to prepare for and respond to severe weather events. Supporting the Mesonet means we’re investing in tools that protect our communities, our infrastructure, and our members.”

This partnership reflects Citizens Electric’s ongoing commitment to community collaboration and public safety. By working with organizations like the University of Missouri Extension, Citizens Electric continues to strengthen the resilience of our region and ensure that members have access to the resources they need, whether it’s for farming, business, or family life.
