Citizens Electric Expands Drone Program to Improve Reliability and Storm Response

All News

Citizens Electric has utilized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, in limited capacities over the years to aid in electric infrastructure inspection. However, following the January 2025 ice storm, the cooperative recognized the need to further define and expand the program after seeing firsthand the significant value aerial support provided during system restoration efforts.

During the storm, the use of both helicopter and drone support allowed crews to assess damage more quickly across large and hard‑to‑access areas, helping prioritize repairs and restore power more efficiently. The experience reinforced the benefits of integrating drone technology more formally into our inspection and maintenance practices.

"The time and effort we saved employing aerial support in last year's storms proved to us that the benefits far outweigh the cost. Just as importantly, it enhances the safety of our personnel by reducing the need to put boots on the ground in some of our more hazardous areas,” said Ron Bushnell, North District Superintendent.

Today, Citizens Electric’s expanded drone program allows trained utility personnel to capture high‑resolution images and video of power lines, poles, and other equipment that can be difficult and time‑consuming to inspect using traditional methods. Drones help crews identify potential issues such as damaged equipment, vegetation encroachment, and storm‑related impacts—both day and night—more quickly and safely.

Members may occasionally see a small drone flying near power lines or utility equipment in their area as part of these inspections. All drone operations are conducted by trained and licensed personnel and comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. The drones are used solely for utility infrastructure inspection and are not used to monitor private property.

In addition to improving worker safety, drone inspections help reduce inspection times, minimize service disruptions, and allow crews to respond more quickly following severe weather events by identifying damage and outage causes sooner.

Citizens Electric remains committed to investing in innovative tools and technologies that strengthen system reliability, improve safety, and provide better service for the members we serve.
